A Trader in Iron Ore on the Entry of the Japanese into U. S. Steel: Closing the Factory in Košice Would Be a Criminal Act
U.S. President Donald Trump unexpectedly announced on Friday a partnership between the American steel giant U. S. Steel and the Japanese conglomerate Nippon Steel. What exactly this is supposed to mean is not yet publicly known. On Sunday, Trump clarified only that it will involve an investment and partial ownership, but it will remain under U.S. control.
The best owner of U. S. Steel would be the one who invests in Košice, says a local ore trader about the potential change of ownership.
If a good offer arrived, it wouldn’t be impossible that the new owner of the American company U. S. Steel would want to sell the Košice steelworks. But definitely not close them, says Peter Kamarás, a Košice-based iron ore trader.
We revitalized a factory that was on its knees
Especially when it is the largest factory in Serbia, with five thousand employees, around which various interest groups circle. Slovak Peter Kamarás, together with his management team — which included former Košice U. S. Steel CEO John Goodish — took on this challenge in the case of the Železara Smederevo steel plant. Not only did they manage to keep the steelworks running despite liquidity problems, but thanks to restarting the second blast furnace, they achieved the best results in the last ten years. This was precisely the key reason why the Chinese steelmaking group HeSteel eventually decided to buy the Serbian steel plant.
